If you haven’t been to the Smithsonian’s National Zoo this season for Zoo Lights then time is running out to take part in the festive light and animatronic display that runs through Jan. 3.

Zoo Lights is something that the National Zoo puts on every season and I don’t think I have ever seen the inside without a crowd. (Perhaps if you buy a ticket when it’s supposed to rain yet the weather holds out long enough for staffers to keep it going.) Anyway, pack your patience especially if you’re driving and have to park in the zoo lot. There was a line of cars but luckily I walked down from Cleveland Park so my wait time was fairly short at the pedestrian entrance.

About the photos:
One thing to keep in mind — it is pretty dark inside the zoo for this event. Every time I pulled out my iPhone it wanted to default to the second setting or max for “night mode.” If you’re using a DSLR or mirrorless camera, crank up the ISO and slow down your shutter to whatever you’re comfortable handholding.

New for this year was my star filter that I was using. I packed a set of four-, six- and eight-sided star filters. It’s a little overwhelming for some photos, but it definitely adds something to the other images.

It costs $9 to get inside with additional attractions like the merry-go-round, holiday train, light maze and of course food vendors costing more on top of admission. Parking is also an extra charge.

It’s a cool event and definitely cheaper than other ticketed holiday light displays in the area, but next year I might take my camera elsewhere. Suggestions are welcome.

Other Smithsonian happenings:
On display through mid-July is the “Grandma Moses: A Good Day’s Work” exhibit over at the Smithsonian American Art Museum. I highly recommend visiting it if you have the chance.
